🦮 4.8 Chengdu Vet Hospital: Shadowing a C-section Case (Canine)

First off, the Yorkshire Terrier puppy is super cute.
Here are my notes from shadowing:

Locate and Exteriorize the Uterus

• Open abdominal cavity via midline incision.

• Use retractors to expose the uterus.

• Gently pull uterus out of incision site.

1. Rupture Amniotic Sac (Amniotomy)

   • Identify the fetal horn.

   • Use scissors or fingers to rupture fetal membranes.

2. Deliver Neonate

   • Grasp the neonate and remove from uterus.

   • If not already ruptured, break the second sac (if intact).

3. Stimulate Neonate Respiration

   • Wrap neonate’s head with a clean towel.

   • Rub the neck and back briskly to stimulate breathing.

   • Clear nasal passages immediately if fluid is present.

   • Continue rubbing to prevent aspiration of amniotic fluid.

   • If no response, hold by hind limbs and gently swing downward to drain airway (only if necessary).

4. Supportive Neonatal Care

   • Keep neonate warm and dry.

   • Monitor for vocalization and regular breathing.

   • Suction nose/mouth if fluid remains.

   • Do not delay – time is critical for survival.
