🐦‍⬛1.11 Luxelakes: “How to Build a Bird-Friendly Garden – First Event of the ‘Waiting Quietly for Spring’ Series”

From January to February, the monthly theme is “Waiting Quietly for Spring.” This series addresses a fundamental issue: in modern landscaping, plants, animals, and humans are often seen in isolation (especially major wised in schools). However, biodiversity only happens when we reconnect them. This month’s focus is on reducing the ecological impact of human housing and creating shared spaces that support both people and birds. The longer time span accounts for the Spring Festival holiday.

Event 1: Identify Bird-Friendly Plants (Jan 11)

Goal: Teach participants to recognize bird-friendly plants (fruits, seeds, nectar) and understand their ecological functions.

Method: Participants printed or hand-drew these plant patterns onto canvas tote bags, helping them remember the plants and encouraging them to share this knowledge in public spaces.

Speaker: A professional landscape designer with a 2,000 m² private garden and over 600 plant species.

Content Covered:

  • How to build bird-friendly terraces and backyards.

  • How to identify bird-preferred plants and their uses (e.g., food, shelter).

  • Shared multiple case studies of successful bird-friendly spaces.

  • Explained how dried leaves, plant diversity, and layering support bird activity.

Hands-On Session:

  • Printed with real plants or hand-painted plant species on canvas bags featuring local bird species.

  • Promoted long-term memory of bird-friendly plants through tactile engagement.

  • Encouraged participants to reflect on their own balconies and gardens: Are they bird-friendly? How can they be improved?
