🐼3.7 Panda Base VH: Revolutionary Panda DNA Collection Method

Spring is approaching. This is the peak breeding season for wild giant pandas. Each year during this period, researchers collect panda DNA to estimate the number of individuals in the wild.

Traditionally, fecal samples were used. This year, we adopted a new technique.

We attached pieces of leather to tree trunks. The leather blends with the bark. When pandas—especially males—urinate and rub against the trees, they leave behind fur. We collect the fur for DNA extraction.

We will assess the effectiveness of this method in two months.
