Today, I led a birdwatching event at Tianfu Forest Park with friends from "Nature Speaks" (a top Chengdu-based nature education center).
The morning session followed a randomized observation model, similar to my first outing event last autumn. Participants drew lots to determine their observation angle. This ensured coverage of various habitats and improved species detection from multiple angles.
We recorded 15 bird species in total. Highlights included some species rarely seen in Chengdu, such as the Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis), Collared Finchbill (Spizixos semitorques), and Light-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis). We also identified the Olive-backed Pipit (Anthus hodgsoni), a cryptic ground-dweller.
The most notable sighting was a Chinese Bamboo Partridge (Bambusicola thoracicus). It crossed the walkway at close range. The group was highly excited—an exceptional encounter credited to Ms. Mao's extraordinary birding luck.
During the group debrief, participants provided accurate morphological descriptions for each species. Observation quality was high.
In the afternoon, Ms. Mao conducted a bird sketching session. Using the morning’s field experience as reference, each participant produced a unique and vivid nature journal entry.
This event combined scientific observation with creative expression. It was a productive and enjoyable collab session.
Additional events are planned. Those who missed this session should stay tuned.
