Dr. Bexell got back to me and said she feels the same way about bird ringing. She mentioned some of her friends who used to tag bats but stopped because they couldn’t handle the emotional conflict. Now they use methods like sound monitoring instead. It’s more expensive upfront but doesn’t stress the animals and can actually save time and money long term.

That gave me some new ideas. I’m wondering if we could try something like radar or sound monitoring in China too in the future.
